We as a species are living longer and living healthier than ever in the current day, and the trend is only set to continue. This puts not only pressure on our natural resources, but also on our infrastructure and housing. As population grows we only have one choice, to build more facilities and more dwellings, and with more dwellings means more land taken from the public. Thus, we will find ourselves at a point of departure from our current models, where we realise that blind infill will lead to blind land use, and a lack there-of of public parks.
This is all considered by planners but what happens when we hit peak? Do we steal agricultural land or do we rob the public of parks and recreation areas? This is where designers, architects and creatives must provide novel solutions
Reclaim acts to not solve, give a solution or be an end to all response to the issues of density in over-population, but seeks to show how reactionary design can aid in mitigation of effects. We propose a design that sits lightly, and only uses public space that has been created either in the in-between, or where space is bridged. The program is set around diverse use-public building with residential quarters, lookouts, and forums. The reaction acts to show we can still build without compromising our public realm.
To give form to our solution and ideas we used a process of abstraction and interpretation, where we were given a starting point of a year 4 students painting and used it for formal generation. This was undertaken in stages of rapid iteration that bounce from abstraction and analysis to for creation and testing. This always drawn back to the initial material (the painting), and the overall issues surrounding over-population.
